He’s doing it again—digging for the diamond ring that plopped out of his hand the night he proposed in the middle of a cornfield.
“Honey, just give up.” I hand him a glass of lemonade.
“Never.”
Two hours later, he runs into the kitchen, smiling huge through sweat and tears.
My heart skips a beat. “You find it?”
“Nope. But I realized something.”
“What?”
“Forty years ago, that ring became a seed that grew into something more precious than any diamond could ever be. Us. I think I best leave it be.”
His kiss is sweet and salty.
