December 1, 2022

As always, December snuck up on me and I’m a day late posting my personal Advent blog, where in (a few) past years, I’ve written about a favorite ornament or a favorite Christmas memory.

So, here we are, actually on December 2 and not December 1, but I’m catching up by posting two!

I’ve had this ornament for more than three decades–since my grown kids were little ones. Each year of their childhood, we gave them an ornament that represented the year. By the time they were grown and on their own, our tree was full of memories. When they had their own Christmas trees, I gave them each the ornaments we’d collected. It was a bittersweet moment, passing along those treasures, but I do love to see them on their trees today.

Admittedly, because this little ornament was perhaps my very favorite, I kept it for myself. Although every ornament I unwrap and hang each year makes me smile, this one always warms my heart and brings back the child in me.

Dioramas always enchant me because my imagination transports me into the scene. When I stare into this ornament, I imagine coming in from the snowy evening and sitting in front of the fireplace. Mrs. Claus offers a tray of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies while little Puppy Claus (who looks a lot like Obi!) hovers close by, waiting for a morsel.

I remember how Andrea and Adam used to stare into it, too, and every year, as I unwrap it, I wonder what they thought as they peered inside. Did I ever ask them? Surely I did, but I didn’t write it down and don’t remember!

Now, I have grandchildren who run to the tree, find the ornament and stare inside. I always hang it at grandchild-eye-level.

One of the many joys of having grandkids is getting a “redo.” So, I’ll ask them to tell me a story about what they see inside. And this time, I’ll write it down!

May each day of your holiday season be filled with moments and memories of joy!
