“I hid a note in there.”
She blushed. “What’d it say?”
“Not telling. You’ll have to find it.”
“I’m not sticking my hand in there,” she said, arms crossed.
He snickered. “That’s ‘cause you’re chicken.”
“Am not!” Her heart beat so hard she was sure he’d hear. She’d have to prove him wrong. Lifting a bamboo shoot, she peeked inside.
A huge cockroach skittered out!
She dropped it and ran away screaming.
Thirty-seven years later, he said, “That note’s still there. Don’t you want to know what it said?”
She kissed him. “I believe I know. I love you, too.”

That’s simple and tender
Thank you, Neil. 🙂
Ah, very sweet story… in the end! 🙂

Sweet little story.
Thanks, Josh. 🙂
Sweet is the word. Lovely little snippet showing a life together.
In the end, all of our lives are snippets . . . and hopefully lovely! Thanks, Iain!
Love how it shows trust developed between them over the years.
Thank you, Fatima! 🙂
What a lovely story. As Fatima says, it shows how trust developed between them over the years – and it does so very gracefully.
Thank you, Penny. 🙂
Such a delightfully sweet tale of innocent love that has matured over the years.
Still easy to recall that innocent love. Thanks, Neel!
That is a real Ah moment at the end. Absolutely delightful, Jan.
Thank you, Jilly. That was my aim. 🙂
Awww. Cupid with cockroaches. 😍
Haha! Now there’s a title! 🙂
Dear Jan,
I don’t like spiders and snakes and that ain’t what it takes to love me, you fool, you fool…I couldn’t help myself. 😉 Love the story. We both went for enduring love this week. <3
Shalom,
Rochelle
A similar theme indeed! You know what they say about great minds. 🙂
Lovely. You have reminded me that once I hid a word in a magic wand. Now I must just remember where I hid that wand.
I’ve done such things many times in my life. One day, in a magic moment, our secrets will reappear! 🙂
Perfect. Just petfect.
Thank you, Ellen! 🙂
Them pets sneak in everywhere😉
Ow, so sweet. So sweet. You can feel the love. Wonderful story, Jan, wonderful.
Thanks so much, Kelvin! 🙂
Awwwe, so sweet.
Thank you, Anurag! 🙂
I think sweet is the word of the day. I like that instead of marring a tree, a hidden note can say so much.
I agree, Stu. I hate the thought of cutting into a tree. A hidden note is far better–even one never found!
I won’t use sweet – coz it’s been done to death 😉 But I shall use, wonderful. A love story for sure. Though, I think I would have gotten him to retrieve said note, which must be compost by now!
Thank you, Dale! I must admit, I thought about the compost factor, but convinced myself that makes the concept of an unread note even “sweeter.” Of course, that was only to avoid a re-write. 🙂
I actually thought like you… why not have it survive…😉
I was going to use “sweet story” too (please don’t hit me). It does have the “awww” factor to it.
Ha ha ! Well, it IS sweet! You’re safe… I only hit in very serious cases… and this definitely does not apply…
Sometimes I think you just have to trust.. and also show a little bit of courage facing spiders and bugs.
I agree, Björn. Though I have a hard time with cockroaches–especially the ones in Texas. 🙂
Really cute! 😀
A heartwarming story about a lasting love (oh all right a sweet story). Beautifully done.
Aw, so sweet.
Love the dialogue at the beginning. You really get that gawky, shy teen talk, alongside the adult love at the end. Well done.
