The Most Romantic Place

PHOTO PROMPT ©Jill Wisoff

“Grandma, tell me the story again about how you met Pops.”

“Well, everyone knows the most romantic place to meet is the Empire State Building, right?”

Allie nods.

“That’s where I was headed that cold, October afternoon. To meet a blind date for coffee. But I was famished, so I stopped at a hot dog stand with a purple and pink umbrella.”

“My favorite colors!”

“When the handsome young man—your grandpa—handed me a steaming hot dog drizzled with mustard, it was love at first sight.”

She giggles, her smile smudged with mustard. “No wonder I love hot dogs!”

THE END

It’s been a whirlwind, wonderful month with the addition of a third grandchild, (Jack!) my nephew’s wedding (Congratulations, Tim and Meghan!) and my favorite writers’ conference (OWFI!) but I’m happy to be back and writing again–even if it’s only 100 words a week. 🙂

Friday Fictioneers is a compilation of writers from around the world who gather online weekly, guided by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The challenge? To write a story in 100 words or less based on a new photo prompt.

And thanks for the photo prompt, Jill Wisoff! I love New York. 🙂

  2. Dear Jan,

Such a sweet story. Oh for a Nathan’s with lots of mustard. 😉 Congratulations again on the new grandbaby. Beautiful. I love the polka dotted picture, too.

    Shalom,

    So, no more blind date!
This was in her fate 🙂
Good story with a happy ending!

  4. Sweet story. Reminds me a bit of Same Time Next Year. The Empire State and the Chrysler are my two favorites in Manhattan.

  5. Iain Kelly says:

Love at first sight – I do feel for her blind date, I wonder how long they waited before giving up and heading home! Congratulations on all your good news 🙂

    • Jan Vanek says:

Iain, I have to admit, I felt guilty about the blind date character, too. Perhaps in a future flash fiction installment, I’ll have him meet his own unexpected love. 🙂

  6. Dale says:

What a sweet story! There is something about New York that attracts the lovers…
Congrats on the new grandbaby and to your nephew for his wedding and I, too, love the polka dots!

    • Jan Vanek says:

Thank you, Dale! I just realized it wasn’t “Same Time Next Year” I was thinking of, as I told J. Hardy Carroll, but “An Affair to Remember.” That’s the movie that added romance to NYC for me. 🙂

  7. James Pyles says:

But was it the sight of the man or the hot dog? 😀

    • Jan Vanek says:

That’s a good question, James, especially since I was hungry as I wrote the story and I could just taste that hot dog with mustard! 🙂

      • James Pyles says:

We had a barbecue at work yesterday to celebrate exceeding our sales target during the first quarter and yes, there were hot dogs, along with a lot of other things I probably shouldn’t have eaten.
